Rebecca…
“Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.”
Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier is one of my very favourite books of all time. It is often the first book I recommend to people when they want to start reading classics. It’s such a great introduction to that genre. It is dark, it is gothic. It has romance, it has mystery, it has murder, it has a great fire, all the drama! It’s an outstanding book. Truly a timeless classic.
I was soooo happy when a new movie adaptation of the book came out last week on Netflix! I couldn’t wait! I finally watched it last night with my friends, well watched it together online😂 (I LOVE all the chats and ranting and discussion as we watched it). It was fantastic! The casting was spot on, the cinematic production was amazing and it was shot beautifully. I love how they built up the tension and the final reveal. Love the music (they used one of the songs quoted in Far From The Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy!! A pleasant surprise!), love the atmosphere created through out the film. All in all I think they have done an amazing job!
The film has mostly stated true to the story. I didn’t mind the few places they have change as they worked better in cinematic production. Kristin Scott who played Mrs. Danvers clearly stole the show. And Armie Hammer has made Mr. Maxim very likeable. Mr. Maxim wasn’t a very likeable or charming person in the book, but Armie was SOOOO FINE in the film he made me love Mr. Maxim😂🔥 He is soo fine!
Anyway, as I always say books are always better! So do read the book but the movie imho has done the book justice!
