Review – Silver Sparrow by Tayari Jones

A breathtaking tale of family secrets, from the international bestselling author of An American Marriage

‘My father, James Witherspoon, is a bigamist.’

This is the breathtaking story of a man’s deception, a family’s complicity, and the two teenage girls caught in the middle. James Witherspoon has two families, one public, the other a closely guarded secret. But when his daughters meet and form a friendship, only one of them knows the truth. Theirs is a relationship destined to explode.

Silver Sparrow is the stunning new novel from the critically acclaimed winner of the 2019 Women’s Prize for Fiction, an author deemed one of the most important writers of her generation.

My Review:

To say I was eager to read Silver Sparrow was an understatement! I loved An American Marriage so much and was so excited to receive this copy of Silver Sparrow from the lovely people at Oneworld Publication, I devoured this book last week. It did not disappoint at all.

This is a story about two girls who have the same father but only one of them is aware of her father’s other “secret” family. It is a coming of age story through the eyes of two girls in the 1980s. It is full of hurt, lies and untold secrets. It is a book that will make you question your own judgement, question the right and the wrong. I found myself drawn to one character more than the other; however I feel sympathy towards both the characters. There was this underlying sadness throughout the book; it was not just about their family secrets but also about what it was like growing up in the 80s as a young black woman. There were humours but also the injustice and inequality that just grips my heart the whole time.

I did find a part of the book quite slow but regardless I have really enjoyed this book and one that I think a lot of you will love too!

Silver Sparrow is out today. Make sure you pick up a copy! Thank you so much Oneworld Publications for this beautiful copy!
