In the mulberry groves of the Pearl River Delta, eighteen-year-old Little Cat carries a terrible secret. And so, in disguise as a boy in blue trousers, she makes the long and difficult passage to Australia, a faraway land of untold riches where it is said the rivers run with gold.
Violet Hartley has arrived off the boat from England, fleeing scandal back home. Like the Chinese immigrants seeking their fortunes on the goldfields, Violet is seduced by the promise of a new frontier. Then she meets Little Cat, a woman who, like her, is trying to escape her past.
As their fates inextricably, devastatingly entwine, their story becomes one of freedom, violence, love and vengeance, echoing across the landscapes of two great continents.
What a captivating and enthralling historical fiction this is! I read The Boy with Blue Trousers a while back and I really enjoyed it.
Carol Jones is a new author to me but I am so in awe with her ability to create such unique but also addictive read. The Boy with Blue Trousers follows the storylines of two women; both are running away from their own home and culture and trying to make a new and better life for themselves in Australia. Little Cat, a girl born in China and Violet, a governess from England who have never met before will have their path crossed on their journey to Australia.
I am quite certain that I haven’t read anything like it before. It is full of actions, danger but also full of inspiration. It is about the disadvantages women face in the 19th centry but what the story has given us is hope and courage. It is about how we can control our fate and destiny. I particularly enjoyed the chapters about Little Cat. Maybe being a Chinese myself I resonate a lot with her. She is so strong minded and determined. I love her character so much.
Carol’s writing is engaging and I love how the scenes are set to enhance the reading experience. It felt so raw and real. I love it!
The Boy With Blue Trousers is out now. I definitely recommend it! Thank you so much for Head of Zeus for this beautiful copy to review.
