I am so excited to be part of the blog tour today for The Girl Before by JP Delaney. This book is absolutely fantastic and utterly consuming!
Enter the world of One Folgate Street and discover perfection . . . but can you pay the price?
Jane stumbles on the rental opportunity of a lifetime: the chance to live in a beautiful ultra-minimalist house designed by an enigmatic architect, on condition she abides by a long list of exacting rules. After moving in, she discovers that a previous tenant, Emma, met a mysterious death there – and starts to wonder if her own story will be a re-run of the girl before.
As twist after twist catches the reader off guard, Emma’s past and Jane’s present become inexorably entwined in this tense, page-turning portrayal of psychological obsession.
Following in the footsteps of Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train, The Girl Before is being brought to the big screen by Academy Award-winning director Ron Howard.
My review: Wow, wow! 4.5/5 obsessing stars!!!
First of all, let me just say I have had so much fun reading this book. This is a book that has gripped me from the very start and I didn’t want to put it down until I read the very last page! And you know what? I want more! I didn’t want this story to end. I need more of this crazy, obsessive, controlling and a bit of a creepy world! It is just sooo addictive, so suspenseful and highly entertaining.
Essentially it is about a girl Jane who moved into this new house and started going out with the architect, Edward Monkton, who built it. The longer she stayed there the more she noticed her life seemed like a repeat of the life of a girl who lived in the house before… the chapters alternate between the POV of the girl who lived there before and the POV of the girl who lives in the house now…… It started to unveil the mystery of this architect and the mystery of the death of the girl who lived there before. It was so clever and I didn’t see the plot twists coming at all. I was shocked because I was expecting a different outcome, so yep it totally got me!
The writing is absolutely fantastic. I love the alternation of different POVs and the short passages and dialogues. It makes the story so fast-paced that you can’t turn the page fast enough! I also love how the author creates suspense, creates the doubt in readers’ mind, creates a bit of fear that’s so relatable in our real life and creates a bit of excitement that sometimes we may not even allow ourselves to feel?! I also love how the book and the story combine a bit of all the elements that I love; it is a psychological mystery, it is a chilling thriller, but at the same time it also is a sexy romance and an adult fiction. I truly loved every minute of reading it.
Last but not least, JP Delaney has created a very unique character Edward Monkton. He is cold, he is obsessed, he is smart, he is a man probably a bit dangerous at times but I do find myself become a bit obsessed with him… feel like I am becoming a girl in the book!!!
Honestly this is such a gripping and hugely entertaining thriller and mystery. I wanted to read it again the moment I finished, it was THAT good.
Thank you so much for Alainna and Quercus Books for sending me this review copy. I truly truly love this book!
(I do not own the images which I used to make the teaser above).
