Book Review

The Forbidden by Jodi Ellen Malpas

Ok, after thinking about it for a while I have decided to break down my review for this book into two parts.

First of all, if you are someone who has just started to read adult romance, or what we call erotica, or have just started to read Jodi’s books, then I think you will absolutely love it. This book has everything you would ever want from an adult steamy romance. The alpha male who is out of the world gorgeous, is so successful, has the best body, has the sexiest voice, and most of all someone like him has fallen completely for a girl, who is as always beautiful and smart. The story is sexy, it is light hearted (l will touch upon the “forbidden” part of this story at the end of this review) and surprisingly not too angsty despite the topic it is trying to tackle. I think it is a good solid adult romance read if you are not looking for something too serious or emotionally engaged, and you will love it.

Ok now, if you are someone like me, who has read my share amount of any types of books including adult romance, or you have read all Jodi’s books and have been with her since her outstanding debut novels This Man series, you will be disappointed. Yes, it has ticked all the boxes for a contemporary adult romance, but that is it. It pains me to say this that there is nothing standout from the book or the story, I feel like we are reading the same story line again since The Protector, then All I Am, and then The Forbidden. I feel like given the sensitive subject Jodi tries to write here, it has so much potential and it should be engaging, it should make the audiences and readers anxious, it should grip us, torture our heart, make us sweat, have heartache etc., but I don’t feel any of them, it is just nothing. Yes I enjoyed the book just like any chick flick but because this is Jodi who wrote one of my all time favourite alpha Jesse Ward, I was expecting much more form Jodi. And it pains me to say this that this book has fallen short for me.

And for the forbidden topic in this book, personally I do not agree with anything Jake and Annie has done. I totally understand love and when you meet the one, I fully support you to hold on to it and fight for it. But I do not agree with the way they do it. There is no justification on deceits and lies, no one deserves that. Honesty is the way forward. But this does not impact my review about this book as this is just my personal preference. I read book so I can feel different things even though sometimes I may not agree with the intend or subject of the book.

I am still looking forward for Jodi’s next book and hope that she will make me fall in love with her characters all over again.

3/5 stars.
